Has Anyone Had Dental X-rays During 1st Trimester?

Posted at 7:50 am under FMX

I had a fmx (full mouth x-ray) of 18 films taken when I was about 2-4 weeks pregant. I wore 2 shields and they were digital X-rays (which I know are alot less radiation).
My question is has anyone else had or know of anyone who had dental x-rays in the 1st trimester and is my baby going to be ok? I am worried sick…literally!
Thanks for your help!

No worries! X-rays do not fly all willy-nilly around a room. X-rays are highly directed beams of radiation. Areas not exposed to that beam recieve very little, if any radiation. So, if your teeth were being imaged, your baby did not receive any radiation, even without the lead apron. We mainly use the lead apron for the patient’s peace of mind! Improvements in technology have allowed the x-ray dose in any exam to drop significantly. Dental x-rays have some of the lowest doses!
The following websites have questions answered by qualified medical personal who are experts in radiation and it’s effects. Here is what I found there:
“The level of exposure from scatter x rays from dental x rays is too low to harm the embryo or fetus at any stage of pregnancy.”http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q21…
“Thus, the dose from typical dental exposure is equivalent to about one-half day of unavoidable natural background—hardly a concern.”http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q29…
“QUESTION: I had a dental x ray while I was pregnant. I am worried that my unborn child might have been exposed to the radiation. Can you please tell me if there are any risks to my baby from this?
ANSWER: There is no information suggesting any risk to an unborn child from dental x rays received by the mother. When a pregnant patient undergoes a complete dental x-ray examination, the radiation dose to the fetus is insignificant. And, by the way, it does not matter whether a lead apron was used or not.”http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/faq…

I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was 13 weeks so yes I did have x-rays in my 1st trimester. It was just a routine cleaning and x-rays and when I finally found out I was pregnant and I had been to the dentist I was a nervous wreck too. But my baby turned out to be just fine…

You have nothing to worry about. I asked my doctor about this when I was pregnant and he told me that there is no potential for harm from having your teeth x-rayed when your pregnant, because the amount you are exposed to is so tiny. It is usually the dentist that do not like to do them until you are into your 3rd trimester. Mine even made me get a permission slip from the baby doctor to do it.

don’t worry your baby is fine the shielding protected your baby you would have to have a huge number of abdominal x-rays to afffect a child . rest easy all is well

No! I didn’t have any x-rays done while pregnant. My dentist would not do it.
